Cliffhanger is a Dutch progressive rockband that was founded in March 1993 by keyboardplayer Dick Heijboer. The repertoire consists exclusively of own material, which was written and arranged by the members of Cliffhanger. This is why the music has its own sound. Dick decided to work out his musical ideas with new musicians. He met Gijs Koopman who became an outstanding musician and composer in a very short time. He managed to take an important place in the band and developed an original and melodic style of playing the bassguitar. After Gijs, Rinie Huigen joined the band. In no time he proved to be a skillful frontman with a distinctive voice. Together with his guitarplay he was another acquisition for the band. Two months later, drummer Hans Boonk decided to join Cliffhanger. With his powerful drumsound he made the band complete.
The music is influenced by other bands like U.K., King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, Yes and Genesis. The sound of the band is due to the use of vintage keyboard sounds, Moog Taurus II bass pedals, Rickenbacker bassguitar and acoustic drums. The power of Cliffhanger lies in the originality of the compositions. This band goes to extremes and is therefore truly a cliffhanger. The name of the band is derived from the movie-term "cliffhanger". A cliffhanger is an "open end" before a break, which leaves you curious for the sequel. This can also be heard in the music. Cliffhanger split up in 1997 (first time) and 2001 (second time).
